After 31 updates, this feels like the right moment for Appy Weather 2’s first .1 version bump. There’s a lot packed into this release, and the app is in a much better place because of it.

Many aspects I wasn’t happy with —especially around interaction and customisation — have now been addressed, alongside several issues that had been bothering me for some time. This update builds on the work of several previous releases that touched on similar themes. All of these changes have effectively combined into something that finally feels complete.

Today, I feel a genuine sense of relief: the first phase of Appy Weather 2’s development is done. On to the next!

New

• Accelerators is a new UI that makes previously available functionality much more discoverable as well as accessible from the bottom right. It consists of two toggles:

  1. Picker (different weather details to pick from the Layers toggle)
  2. Switcher (locations and weather sources to switch between using the Broadcast toggle)

  This replaces the not-as-easy slide-up sheet from previous versions, which consisted of two-states (with the second pull-up state, containing locations/sources, unknown to many).

  The best — and new — part: they are both totally customisable! From the Accelerators section in Settings, you can reorder items and toggle their visibility too. This to ensure you only keep quick access to what matters to you.

• There’s a new Section Navigation setting in the User Interface section that lets you choose how sections on both the Forecast and Subscription screens display. It continues to default to tab labels, but you can now replace it with page indicator dots. As long as you’re aware you can swipe between sections, and would like less UI and more weather displayed, then this is recommended.

Improvements

• Various summary improvements for Later’s weather on the Timeline when it involves precipitation — should read more smoothly/clearly, also avoiding repetition.

• When you change the point of focus via Picker, summaries throughout the UI (except on the Now card in the Timeline and the Hour screen) should not change — this should make things feel less jarring.

• Should feel better when you switch between temperature and non-temperature points on an expanded Later card: chart change fluidly animates.

  • X-axis labels on Later chart should be consistently and correctly positioned.

  • Icons on Later chart should be positioned at a more optimal point on the line running through.

• When a subscription consists of a single point, unit is not displayed in cells for a cleaner appearance.

• If weather doesn’t load at start-up, layout tweaked for easier access to other providers, and you have access to Settings now too.

• User Interface settings re-organised.

• Icons in Daily screen’s range bar chart that covers a minimal change between max/min values remains correctly sized.

• Appearance of precipitation chart on Now card when there’s a sudden shift should look more smooth.

• Precipitation intensity and amount should show when relevant as chips on the Day screen.

• When opening the Later card, the forecast alignment ring should be visible by default (and not appear suddenly causing layout to jump).

• Precipitation amount chart markers should look right, with ”None” at the bottom, representing zero precipitation.

• Space between summary and bar chart on Day screen reduced for a more compact feel.

• Chart labels for sunrise, sunset, temp high/low are more prominent on Day screen chart.

Fixes

• Reduced instances when the Later card’s summary may be blank.

• When the Now card shows precipitation details for next 60 minutes, changing to a non-temperature data point from Picker will continue to show appropriate values besides the weather icon.

• Won’t ever see city name duplicated underneath a location’s title (besides country name).

• Xweather should show next 60 minutes of precipitation data when it’s going on.

• Summary for next 7 days on Daily screen should not incorrectly state weather for the next few days is <x> followed by <y>, when <x> actually happens on the next day only.

• Bar chart values on Day screen should be represented more accurately, stopping previous cases when nothing would sometimes show.

  • Bottom marker on chart should be visible.

• Dew point chip shows chart markers.

New

• As part of the ongoing effort to increase personalisation in Appy Weather, you can now change the appearance of the weather icons: Adam Whitcroft’s Climaicon is a new Minimal icon set available to switch to from the Appearance section in Settings.

  It should be noted that its current selection of icons is not as rich as the still-default homemade Warm option; I’ll look at addressing this in future updates. In the meantime, for those who prefer a cleaner look to their weather icons, hopefully this is the sort of aesthetic you’ve been asking for.

Improvements

• When the weather for a period of hours is a contrasting mix (such as sunny and cloudy), then the icon will more consistently reflect this.

Fixes

• If you didn’t have your location permission set to allow updates all the time (and had your current location as the default), your widgets will have stopped loading — this has been corrected. That said, if you do care for your current location to stay up-to-date — when on the move and not in the app — it’s recommended you give the app permission to check for updates all the time.

• On the Hour screen, the hour list rows in the Comparison section show the correct icon (and not just cloudy).

  • The outline around the currently viewed hour is now always (and clearly) visible and consistent.

• No longer shows a string such as “Light showers night” when describing the weather for a day.

• No longer shows unlocalised RAIN string in the summary string on the Daily screen.

This update focuses mainly on location related improvements: more reliable updates and extra options to help you manage your list. Firstly, another big apology for any inconvenience/unreliability you may have been facing with this; it’s not a straightforward problem, which is why it’s been a pain to fully resolve. I’m optimistic that it’s been cracked, or at worst much, much better than before and pretty reliable in general.

New

• On the Locations screen, you can now long-press on each location to open its context menu. There’s slight differences between the options available for your current vs saved locations.

  • You can now save a current location, in case you are away somewhere that you want to track the weather of again in the future. Doing so presents you with a dialog to give the location a custom (memorable) name if you like.

  • With saved locations, you also now have the ability to rename any.

  • Swipe actions are still available, but there are duplicated in the context menu for increased discoverability.

• On the Location settings screen, you can now set the default from there too.

  • Saved locations can be managed here too, like on the Locations screen, and you can drag/drop to rearrange their order now too.

Improvements

• Big under-the-hood changes targeting improved reliability for background location updates. One of the contributing factors is a new request for you to allow the app to monitor physical activity. This so when you begin moving, such as in a car, there’s a trigger to seek an updated current location. Even if you opt against granting this permission, other improvements should still result in a noticeable improvement. To be clear though, none of your activity is stored if you opt in.

  In our tests, updates were consistent and timely. Please let me know via email if your experience is different (would also love to know if you were having problems before, but are no longer seeing the same issues — to give me validation that the improvements are rock solid with no remaining gaps).

• The currently selected location will appear distinct for clarity on the Locations screen.

• Reduced the prominence of the precipitation probability/total hours pill below a bar in the Daily screen chart so it isn’t confused for an extension to temperature low for the day.

Fixes

• When you leave the app from its Settings screen to Android’s and return, there should not be any odd layouts visible preventing you from using the app normally.

• If your current location is not your default, selecting it should work fine.

  • On a similar note, if you check your non-default current location and you have the sticky temperature notification on, restarting the app should work fine now.

• Background color of time of day pills on Daily screen chart in Dark mode has been corrected to match its parent container’s.

New

• On the Daily screen bar charts, the precipitation probability pill — when a day is expected to have some — now also displays the number of hours precipitation is expected on the day. Previously, and in other apps, a day with a bit of rain may on the surface appear to rain as much as a day with a lot of rain — hopefully this extra glanceable information should ensure you are never mislead or need to double-check for clarity.

Fixes

• Map should load again.

• Met Office should work again.

• Pressure value is actually converted to the desired format, and not a mb value but with your unit misleadingly/inaccurately showing.

Small change in the bump to 2.0.27.1: for new users, you can now skip the onboarding tour from the first screen, bypassing the paywall in the process. The [Skip] button that shows when you do the tour is also more prominent throughout, especially on the paywall.

New

• When you pull up the drawer, you’ll now be able to select the precipitation amount data point — most useful when viewed on the Daily screen. Really sorry to all concerned for taking as long as it has to restore this popular data point. It may not be perfect across every surface, but I’ll look to polish its appearance across the UI in coming updates. Any issues you see or feedback you have about this, such as additional spots it can be added to, please let me know.

  • This is now also a data point you can select as a condition for a smart subscription.

Improvements

• When you change the app’s data point, Daily’s list rows will show the same weather icons as the default temperature view, and should feel better overall as there’s more consistency between switches.

• Summary strings when rain occurs but is not prevalent should read more concisely.

Fixes

• As part of the work to add the new precipitation amount data point, a full sweep of all other existing selectable points were done: This has resulted in their visibility/accuracy to be improved/corrected, especially on the Daily screen.

• Correct sunrise/sunset times should always show, regardless of weather provider.

• Summary strings for a period of days should not mistakenly indicate the weather at the start of the period is stable when it’s not.

Hot-fix

• App now targets Android 36 to meet Google Play requirements. This should not impact your experience, but if you start to see anything unusual, please let me know.

  • Location retrieval made more robust due to above.

Improvements

• Smart subscriptions are more compact when they focus on specific times of day: inapplicable hours will not display if at start/end of day and will show as a reduced block when in between applicable hours. This makes the hours that matter take priority.

• Changing your default location should immediately update your sticky temperature notification.

Fixes

• Changing locations should work reliably, whether to your current, a previously saved or a new search result. If you were having this issue before, please let me know if I’m wrong to claim this (again)... or right even for validation purposes even!

• A smart subscription that’s daytime or nighttime specific will display matched hours correctly (previously showed no hour matches).

• Smart subscription should not crash when you select specific times of day.

• When your UTC timezone is x-hour(s) and 30 minutes, hours will no longer show in :30 intervals.

• Current location row on Locations sheet should never have a highlighted row appearance when not on a two-pane (foldable) screen.

• If for whatever reason there was an issue updating the sticky ongoing current temperature notification, it will clearly state so with no incorrect, confusing temperature value displayed.

• Should not end up in a state without any location appearing as your default on the Locations screen.

This is a hot-fix update that fixes a couple of regressions, in addition to previous fixes in the original 2.0.25: map images should show again, and Met Office should work again too. Thank you for the instant feedback and sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

Improvements

• Radar zoom starts zoomed much closer to your location.

  • If it’s too close or too far away, state-saving remembers your zoom level. The next time you return to this screen, it will be restored to exactly how you left it.

• If you change location, you will be auto-scrolled to the top of the screen once weather has been retrieved.

Fixes

• Changes made to stop tapping on a saved location (or search result) not showing its weather. Please let me know if this fix has worked, as I’ve been unable to ever reproduce this issue myself.

• Met Office should work more reliably every day again.

• When you switch to a saved location, it should be possible to return to your current location.

• Map images should show again.

Fixes

• More checks inserted to ensure a user’s lifetime purchase is recognised (acknowledged), and prioritised over any subscription purchase when restoring purchases.

• When you select a time of day filter on the Daily screen, the section’s header should continue to reflect the number of days visible, e.g. shouldn’t state ”Next 9” when only seven days are visible.
